If you’re ready for a whirlwind adventure full of adventure, beauty, and wildlife, 2 days in Olympic National Park is the perfect way to start.

What is Olympic National Park?

Olympic National Park is a diverse natural reserve on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Established in 1938, it spans over 1 million acres and features a wide range of ecosystems—from rugged coastlines and rainforests to alpine peaks and glaciers. The iconic Olympic Mountains rise above dense forests and the Pacific coastline, creating breathtaking scenery.

The park is rich in biodiversity, home to unique plant and animal species. Lush rainforests with towering Sitka spruce and red cedar trees shelter wildlife like black bears, elk, and the Olympic marmot. Coastal areas feature tide pools filled with sea life, and visitors might spot sea otters and seals on the rocks.

Covering 922,651 acres, the park is far too large to explore in one day. We spent two days here but could have stayed much longer. To make the most of our visit, we divided the park into eastern and western sections.

Getting There

Our trip began with a scenic drive from Anacortes to Coupeville. In Coupeville, we boarded a ferry to Port Townsend. The process was smooth and organized, and the 40-minute ride was both relaxing and filled with anticipation. We explored the ferry and enjoyed the views along the way. Once in Port Townsend, we drove to Port Angeles via winding roads and checked into the Olympic Lodge, ready for adventures in Olympic National Park to start tomorrow.

Itinerary For 2 Days In Olympic National Park: Day 1, Stop 1

Hurricane Ridge

We woke early, full of excitement and ready to hit the trails. Our first stop was Hurricane Ridge, known for its panoramic views and colorful wildflowers in warmer months. The 20-mile drive there winds through lush forest and rugged terrain, taking about 45 minutes. Though the road was twisty, the views were anything but boring. Each turn revealed towering trees, deep valleys, and distant peaks. As we climbed higher, the air grew cooler and our anticipation built. At the top, we parked near the old Visitor Center, eager to begin exploring.

High Ridge Trail

We set off on the High Ridge Trail toward Sunset Point, the morning sun casting a golden glow over the landscape. The trail began as a smooth, paved path, then turned to dirt as it climbed. At a fork, we chose our route, both options leading to the summit. As we reached the first hill, Mount Angeles came into view, its snow-covered peak shining in the sun. It was at this point that the Sunrise Trail diverged towards the Klahhane Ridge Trail, if you want to hike further.

The scenery felt like a living painting—wildflowers swayed in the breeze, birds sang overhead, and mountain silhouettes framed the valleys below. The scent of pine and fresh blooms filled the air, adding to the trail’s peaceful magic.

A special moment came when a black-tailed deer appeared just off the path. The girls watched in awe, whispering with joy as they took in the quiet beauty of the moment.

Hurricane Hill Trail

After our amazing encounter, we drove 1.5 miles to the end of Hurricane Ridge and reached the Hurricane Hill trailhead. Stepping out, the crisp mountain air energized us for the hike. The wide trail gently curved along a south-facing slope, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

We walked through open forests with tall pines and low shrubs, surrounded by shades of green and brown. Leaves rustled, birds called in the distance, and everything felt calm and peaceful. Three switchbacks helped us climb steadily, each turn revealing new scenery. Along the way, signs shared facts about the area’s history, local peaks, nearby towns, and past wildfires—reminders of nature’s power and resilience.

The trail became steeper as we climbed, but due to limited time, we turned back after 30–45 minutes. Hurricane Hill is known for unpredictable weather and strong winds, so reaching the summit would’ve required more time and caution. Even without reaching the top, the views were stunning. Wildflowers swayed in the breeze, adding bursts of color. The Olympic Mountains stretched into the distance, and to the south, the snow-covered Bailey Range shone under the sun—an unforgettable sight.

Elwha Valley

Guided by our audio tour, we took a spontaneous detour to the Elwha Valley—a lesser-known gem in Olympic National Park. Though often overlooked, the valley is rich in beauty and history. The audio guide shared stories about the Elwha River’s importance to local Indigenous tribes and the environmental impact of recent dam removals. These stories deepened our connection to the land and its cultural roots.

We discovered a short, family-friendly trail leading to Madison Falls. The easy hike ended with a stunning view of the waterfall cascading down rocky cliffs. The sound of rushing water created a peaceful, calming atmosphere.

Lake Crescent

After our morning hikes, we made our way to Lake Crescent Lodge for a much-needed lunch. The historic lodge, with its rustic charm and lake views, was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal while sharing stories from the trail. After lunch, we couldn’t resist the call of Lake Crescent’s clear, turquoise waters. This 624-foot-deep lake was carved by glaciers during the Ice Age, and its low nitrogen levels keep the water exceptionally clear—sometimes revealing the lakebed 60 feet below.

Instead of kayaking, the girls splashed in the chilly water, laughing and soaking in the moment. Surrounded by towering trees and mountain views, we dipped our toes in and let the peaceful beauty of Lake Crescent wash over us—each ripple echoing our joy.

Salmon Cascades

After leaving beautiful Lake Crescent, we headed toward the Salmon Cascades on our way to the Sol Duc Falls trailhead. Though it was July and unlikely we’d see salmon swimming upstream, Buttercup—our animal lover—was eager to visit. As we arrived, moss-covered boulders framed the rushing, crystal-clear river. Sunlight danced on the water as it tumbled over rocks, filling the air with a soothing, natural symphony. We paused to take in the scene and reflect on the salmon’s incredible journey upstream. Even without spotting any, we were in awe of their strength and determination.

Sol Duc Falls

After a brief stop at Salmon Cascades, we made our way to the Sol Duc Falls trailhead. The wide, well-kept path led us through a lush, green forest that felt almost magical. Towering trees and dappled sunlight made the walk both peaceful and family-friendly.

As we hiked, the sound of rushing water grew louder until the stunning Sol Duc Falls came into view. Depending on the season, the waterfall splits into up to four streams, plunging 48 feet into a narrow canyon—a breathtaking display of nature’s power. Several viewpoints offered unique perspectives of the falls, and a bridge over the river gave us an incredible view right above the rushing water. It was the perfect spot to pause, take photos, and soak in the moment.

Sol Duc Hot Springs

As the day ended, we checked into the Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort and relaxed in the hot springs. The spring water, a mix of rain, melting snow, and volcanic gases, created mineral-rich waters that rose through a fissure, offering soothing warmth. The girls played in the freshwater pool while Dustin and I soaked in the mineral hot springs. The warm waters were the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure, surrounded by towering trees and calming nature sounds.

Rialto Beach

The next morning, we set off at dawn, excited for our adventure at Rialto Beach. This stunning spot features rugged shores, giant drift logs, and crashing waves. Our main goal was to explore the tide pools, but timing them with low tide was key. When we arrived, the tide hadn’t fully receded, but the sight of waves crashing against the shore and massive drift logs was mesmerizing. The salty air and rhythmic waves added to the thrill.

Before leaving, we made an impromptu stop at a low-water area and were amazed to find a pair of bald eagles and playful otters! It was the perfect end to our Rialto Beach adventure.

Ruby Beach

Ruby Beach, famous for its reddish sand and dramatic sea stacks, is a must-see along Washington’s Olympic coastline. This stunning spot draws visitors with its natural beauty and diverse ecosystems. As we explored, the sound of the ocean retreating created a peaceful backdrop. Low tide revealed tide pools teeming with marine life. The girls’ laughter echoed as they discovered sea anemones and starfish in vibrant colors, from bright orange to deep purple.

Buttercup and I found crabs scuttling and mollusks nestled in rock crevices. The tide pools were a living classroom, offering a chance to witness the delicate balance of life in this dynamic coastal environment.

Hoh Rain Forest

After our beach adventures, we headed to the Hoh Rain Forest, one of the largest temperate rainforests in the U.S. and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We faced a long wait in line to access the park, a result of our late start after the tide pools. After about an hour, we finally entered.

The Hoh Rain Forest, known for its vibrant ecosystem, offers several trails, each showcasing the forest’s beauty and biodiversity. We chose the Hall of Mosses Trail, a popular route known for its accessibility and stunning views. As we hiked, the forest’s sounds and earthy scents surrounded us. Towering Sitka spruces and western hemlocks lined the trail, and patches of ferns and wildflowers added color. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting beautiful shadows. Along the way, we learned about the forest’s unique ecology through informational signs, highlighting the role of mosses and the rain that sustains this biodiverse environment.
